The Director of the Centre for Health Technology Evaluation is responsible for the development of national guidance on the use of medicines, medical devices, diagnostics and other interventions used in the NHS.
The decisions taken in the Centre for Health Technology Evaluation are some of the most difficult in British public life, affecting both the nature and extent of NHS care and the commercial interests of life sciences companies in the UK and beyond.
The director will need to combine a deep understanding of the science involved in developing health technologies, with an awareness of the social, political and economic contexts in which the guidance on their use is developed. The director will need to deploy highly developed interpersonal skills in balancing the interests and sometimes competing ambitions of the stakeholders involved in the development of NICE treatment recommendations.
The director is accountable to the chief executive and is responsible for managing 144 staff, mainly based in NICE’s offices in Manchester, and a budget of £13 million.
The successful candidate will already have demonstrated the ability to operate at a senior level, managing complex, science-informed methods and processes, with clear deliverables produced against challenging timelines. They will be familiar with the science base for life sciences products and with the techniques for its interpretation.
The post is based in Manchester but will involve meetings in London and elsewhere in the UK, and occasional international travel.
